ethOS: World’s First Ethereum-Based Mobile Operating System

There was a time when imagining that you could be able to trade millions of dollars just by clicking a few buttons on your PC but that is the reality now. People had not contemplated how much science would progress in just a few decades. It has grown so advanced now that there are talks about humans on Mars.

Although this might not be as huge as humans on Mars, the EthOS is still a big achievement as we will finally have an operating system that would be developed by Ethereum. It might be difficult for people to imagine a mobile phone operating system that is based on Ethereum natively but it is going to be a reality soon.

Hence, in this article, we will be telling you everything you need to know about the world's first ETH-based mobile phone operating system, what features it has, what its objectives might be, and much more. So let us get started.

Introducing Ethereum OS

The Ethereum OS or EthOS is a released smartphone operating system that is based on the fork of the LineageOS android. This operating system is made so that the Web3 technologies can be used on it without any difficulties.

The ethOS's official Twitter handle shared a video in July 2022 saying that the first version of ethOS was live and that the developers were excited for the community to start testing the OS and helping it build web3 features and apps.

Users would be able to do web3 transactions natively along with being able to buy NFTs through the onboard wallets after they install the ethOS on the compatible smartphones with the help of dApps.

Users can also operate light nodes once they have this OS functional on their phones. They will be able to configure and run the metamask transactions permissionlessly as well as securely through these light nodes.

The ethOS will enable anyone to mint NFTs through the metamask wallets and trade and store them without any permission requirements. All in all, the ethOS will change how web3 transactions are done through smartphones.

Objective Of ethOS

The objective of the ethOS would be to mainly allow all the web3 functions to be carried out on a smartphone without any setbacks. It will give you direct access to the crypto world the moment you take your phone in your hand.

This Ethereum operating system will come with a built-in wallet which you can own as a first-class citizen and it will be pretty useful for anyone who is not yet familiar with all the things about cryptocurrencies.

Something that will make this OS much more user-friendly is that people would not need to worry about the private keys of their wallets as those will be encrypted in the hardware with this OS. The hardware we are talking about here is the Titan Chip.

Another thing you'll be able to do with this OS is that you'll be able to browse the internet in a decentralized manner as it will directly connect you with the dApps. The browsers will have IFPS supportand that will give you access to the .eth domain support and hence, you can have .eth websites that have good content.

EthOS will also have a dApp store like the apple store and it will be managed completely by the Ethereum community. All the dApps on the dApp store would be regulated using smart contracts.

Basically, the objective of EthOS is to increase the potential of a smart phone as it would be able to incorporate more and more blockchain or Web3 features easily.

What’s Under The Hood?

The creation of the EthOS is a very challenging task as there are a lot of technicalities involved and hence, it takes a lot of time as well. As the EthOS is built on the LineageOS fork, it enables it to focus on all the blockchain features specifically.

The Android features on this OS would only be used where they are necessary. The LineageOS, which is the base OS for the ethOS, is a widely used Android fork that does not have any google-specific features on it and that is why it is much more secure and privacy-oriented. Another advantage of having built EthOS over LineageOS is that it is open source and it can support most smartphones.

The blockchain support on EthOS means that it will verify all the blocks but it will not store the blockchain data, this is because the OS runs a light Ethereum client as a system service. This system service brings a simplified in-app setup and hence, the developers can easily connect to a local JSON-RPX API from their apps.

The developers won't even have to worry about any downstream infrastructure. Another advantage of EthOS is that the users won't have to rely on any 3rd part services to get access to the Ethereum blockchain. This OS will have advanced storage options and hence, you can move to a full node setup from a light node and hence, all this will lead to true decentralization.

Features of ethOS

Now that you know about the objectives and a bit of functionality of the EthOS, let us see what all features this OS has.

The EthOS is a community development project and is open source, hence, it will work on most of the Android phones. The OS is also currently in the beta version of development so more features are going to get added.

Right now, this OS can be installed on phones like Pixel 3 and Pixel 5a but it will become functioning on more phones in the future. This OS would have a native wallet as well as other apps from the Ethereum network.

The built-in wallet would be compatible with almost all crypto wallets and would be very user-friendly for any crypto user. It will also have the private key encrypted into its hardware using an integrated security chip, to increase the security and ease of access for the users.

The aim of the EthOS is to become an ultimate tool for all Web3 creators as well as browsers and hence, this is going to make the smartphones free of any permissions required to access the blockchain network.

As EthOS is built on top of LineageOS, it will provide features that are specific to the blockchain as well as dApps compatibility. It runs on an Ethereum light client system and hence, it verifies all the blocks but doesn't give data storage for the blockchain. As we mentioned earlier, this operating system will also have decentralized browsing, it will support IPFS and .eth domains as well.

Conclusion

The EthOS will change how the web3 transactions are performed. With Ethereum bringing its dedicated mobile phone the Ethereum Phone, users will only get an increased benefit from it all.

If you are someone who is involved deeply with the crypto world or wants to get deeply involved, then be sure to upgrade your smartphone's OS to the ethOS in the future. For more information regarding cryptocurrency topics, visit the Hypergrowth website.
